Types of Caps: A Guide to Popular Headwear Styles

18 Jun 2025 |

Hats are often a sticky subject for many men, as they don’t like the way they look in them. We’re here to tell you that there are plenty of types of caps that everyone can find a style for their head! Whilst it can be a bit of trial and error, we firmly believe that every man deserves to find the right hat for the right occasion. Here’s our guide to finding the right cap for you, along with a look at the four most popular types of caps, too.

3 Tips for Choosing the Best Types of Caps for You

As we said above, many men struggle to find the right cap because they simply think they don’t have the right face shape for one. However, it’s important to consider which events you want to wear the cap to and what you’re going to be wearing first. Here are three things to think about when choosing different types of caps.

1. Plan for the Occasion

Casual occasions require a different type of cap compared to a formal occasion. Tweed flat caps are perfect for the dressiest of occasions, such as race days, but we wouldn’t recommend wearing a baseball cap for those kinds of events. On the other hand, bush hats are ideal for heading to a local music festival, but you might look out of place wearing a flat cap.

2. Consider the Rest of Your Outfit

As we said above, the occasion and your outfit need to find perfect harmony before wearing the perfect cap. If you’re wearing a formal outfit, you might spoil it if you stick a baseball cap on your head. Alternatively, jeans and a T-shirt may look out of place with a tweed flat cap. However, it’s all about where you’re heading and the confidence you have to rock the outfit!

3. Choose the Cap That Fits Your Face the Best

This is probably the trickiest step. Some caps fit some face shapes better than others. Whilst there are plenty of recommendations as to which types of caps fit which face types the best, we’re big believers in choosing whichever you like the best and which feels the most comfortable. Many people find that they suit lots of different types of caps, but some find that they’re limited in the types of styles they can use. It’s often trial and error until you find the right style for you. Once you do, buy it in multiple colours so you have a colour for every outfit!

4 Types of Caps for Every Country Gentleman

If you haven’t quite found the right cap for you yet, fear no longer. We’ve created this guide to help you out in finding the perfect cap for your style and lifestyle.

A Tweed Flat Cap

Tweed flat cap

If there’s any quintessential Rydale country cap, it’s our tweed flat caps. They’re one of our best-selling items across our entire collection, and it’s because they’re classic in style. We’ve tweaked the design very slightly over the years, but it’s remained as close to a traditional flat cap as possible.

The outer hard-wearing wool blend has been designed to last you for years, and the satin inner lining means your head should stay cool in summer, regardless of the weather. It also gives it a more luxurious feel. However, it will also keep you warm during winter as the wool blend retains the heat, making a tweed flat cap the ideal cap for all year round.

A Wax Flat Cap

If you’re looking for a modern alternative, how about a wax flat cap instead? This design is fully waterproof, so it’s a perfect alternative for rainy days, working outside, or outdoor festivals at any time of year. Wax cotton is an incredibly durable material, so again, it should last for years. The neutral shades also make it wearable with just about every country outfit.

Wax flat caps are much easier to clean, too, with a wet cloth. However, to keep them waterproof, they need to be protected, just like a wax jacket would. In fact, you can use the same reproofer as you would for a jacket. It doesn’t need doing too often, but between seasons is a great time to deep clean your wax cap and reproof it.

A Bush or Bucket Hat

A bush or bucket hat is more casual than a flat cap but can look just as stylish. Bush hats tend to be a little more practical than bucket hats, as they’re mostly waterproof. That makes it perfect for every occasion, from a local music festival to a trip to the seaside. It’s also small enough to fold up and pop in a pocket or rucksack if you no longer want to wear it.

Again, with it being made from waxed cotton, it will need reproofing every so often if you want it to remain waterproof. However, you can still use it as a summer bush hat to keep the sun off your hair. The internal cotton lining is perfect for summer or winter: it will keep your head cool during the summer but retain the heat during winter. It’s another cap for all year long!

A Wax or Tweed-Print Baseball Cap

On the more casual end of the scale are baseball caps. Made for sport, they’re designed to wick away any sweat with a cotton band around the inside rim of the hat. Baseball caps are more widely worn now for everyday use, but they’re a necessity for many sports, from golfing to tennis, especially on a warm sunny day.

A wax cap is showerproof, but will also require reproofing every so often. It’s not waterproof for huge downpours, but a bit of rain will keep your head dry enough. As with all of our baseball caps, the back is adjustable for extra comfort, too.

We hope that this guide to various types of caps helps you to find the right cap to fit not only your face type, but also the event you’re attending. With our complete range, we’ve got you covered for just about every occasion!
