Yorkshire Walks: The Best Peaceful Routes to Escape the Crowds - Header Image

Rydale analysed 32 routes and 7,524 reviews to uncover Yorkshire’s most peaceful walking routes, from quiet coastal paths to scenic reservoir circuits.

Not all Yorkshire walks have to mean busy beauty spots, packed car parks, and queues for the best views. For walkers looking to slow down and escape the crowds, Yorkshire is still full of quieter routes where the scenery is just as impressive, but the paths feel far more peaceful.

Rydale analysed a shortlist of 32 Yorkshire walking routes across North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Using in-app filters on best-rated hiking apps, routes were first identified based on indicators such as being quiet or not crowded. Key data points were then collected for each walk, including rating, review count, distance, elevation gain, duration, difficulty, and route type. In total, the analysis covered 32 walking routes and 7,524 reviews across Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire’s most peaceful routes

North Yorkshire is where the county’s quieter walks start to feel bigger and more dramatic. These routes show that you don’t need to sacrifice scenery to find a more peaceful day out.

Methodology

Rydale analysed a shortlist of 32 walking routes across North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, using data collected from best-rated hiking apps.

Routes were first shortlisted using in-app filters to identify walks marked as quiet or not crowded. Key data points were then recorded for each route, including rating, review count, distance, elevation gain, duration, difficulty and route type. In total, the dataset covered 7,524 reviews across Yorkshire.

To identify the top Yorkshire walks in each sub-region, rating was treated as the main factor, with review count used only as a secondary tie-breaker where routes shared the same score.

What to Wear for Yorkshire’s Peaceful Walks

The right clothing can make all the difference when heading out on Yorkshire’s walking routes. From breezy waterside paths and shaded woodland trails to open countryside tracks, dressing for the surroundings helps you stay comfortable and enjoy the day whatever the weather brings.

What to wear on a walk

Waterside Walks

For reservoir circuits, coastal routes, or lakeside trails, it pays to be prepared for changing conditions. Open stretches can feel windier, and showers often arrive with little warning, so a waterproof jacket is a dependable outer layer. Supportive waterproof boots help keep feet dry on damp ground, while a cap is a useful extra to protect your eyes from water glare.

Woodland Walks

Woodland trails often feel cooler beneath the trees, even during milder months. A warm fleece is ideal for shaded paths, adding comfort without unnecessary bulk. Tracks can also be muddy or uneven, so sturdy walking boots with reliable grip are a sensible choice. A practical cap helps with low branches, light drizzle, and keeping the sun out of your eyes when the canopy opens up, while comfortable hiking socks reduce rubbing on longer walks.

Countryside Walks

For open countryside routes, comfort and versatility are key. Muddy gateways, grassy paths, and rolling tracks all call for practical footwear such as short wellies or waterproof boots. Stretchy walking trousers are ideal for longer days outdoors, allowing easy movement while keeping you comfortable mile after mile. To finish the look, a tweed waistcoat or gilet adds a warm extra layer without the bulk of a coat, making it a great option for relaxed country strolls.
