What to Wear with Brogues to Sport a Classically British Look

07 Jul 2020 |

Formal or casual, brogues look great, don’t they? Whether adding style and character to your workwear ensemble or smartening up a pair of dark-wash jeans, they just work.

Gone are the days when a pair of perfectly-polished shoes meant formal wear. So, if you’re wondering what to wear with brogues for (pretty much) any occasion, we’ve got some fine ideas.

What are Brogues?

Brogue Boots

Brogues are sturdy leather shoes constructed from multiple leather cuts to form a timeless shoe (or boot) with boundless character. Complete with thin yet durable laces and a myriad of intricate features, they’re instantly recognisable in a lineup of classic shoes – even with a number of styles

From the sharp wingtip to the precise broguing and the tough stitching lining the outsole, excellent craftsmanship is clear to see. Typically complete with a grippy sole, they’re perfect for throwing on no matter the weather conditions, and undoubtedly level up any outfit – for both ladies and gents.

Where Do Brogues Come From?

A favourite amongst quintessentially British folk, it’s no surprise that brogues originated pretty close to home in Scotland and Ireland. Back in the 16th century, country ladies and gents wore them when working on the farms, helping them navigate rough, mucky terrain with confidence.

They were certainly onto something – a deep tread is always a brilliantly practical choice, isn’t it? But we can think of many modern-day alternatives that would be much more appropriate for the job today (cough, wellies, cough).

How Should Brogues Fit?

It’s not rocket science. Brogues should fit like any other shoe – snug enough to provide support and prevent movement, but not so tight they restrict the bending of your foot. The laces should be tight without cutting off circulation, and you should have ample room in the toe box to wiggle your toes. Between your heel and the back of the shoe, 0.5 cm or less is perfect, allowing for comfort when walking as well as room for thick socks.

Too small? There are so many easy ways to stretch leather boots and shoes. But beware – these techniques won’t work miracles, and they certainly won’t stretch your shoes from a ladies size 3 to a size 5.

What to Wear with Brogues

Brogue Styling for Country Gents

Despite being such a staple piece in any country gent’s wardrobe (in both shoe and boot form), many folks don’t know what to wear with brogues. So, first of all, let’s make this simple – brogues work seamlessly with smart-casual workwear and 3-piece suits, as well as clean-cut chinos and jeans. Essentially, they're a sophisticated all-rounder.

If you want a style that has a deep tread to complement countryside life, you’re in luck. Our Millington II brogues are perfectly designed for practicality with their sturdy sole and soft, breathable lining. Go for a pair of jeans, a belt, and a checked shirt for the ultimate country gentleman look.

If the weather is drab and dreary (let’s be honest – when is it not?), a boot-style brogue is probably a more fitting option. And the Millington II brogue market boots pair excellently with many of our menswear pieces, such as classic moleskin trousers. But they look equally stylish with our tweed shooting suits.

Brogue Styling for Country Ladies

The main issue for ladies is that we’re never really sure what to wear with brogues, are we? A sturdy shoe with a particularly masculine silhouette and rather hardy design features, knowing how to style them elegantly can be a challenge.

Should they be worn with a suit? Do they go well with jeans? Or must they be reserved for formal settings only?

Well, there are no official rules – so that makes things a little easier. But if you’re struggling to style a brogue shoe, why not try a pair of brogue boots? Slim-fitting jeans pair well with this look, and if you go for a dark wash, you can add a pop of colour to your outfit with a jumper or t-shirt. Or introduce a pattern with one of Rydale’s country check shirts

Dressing Brogues Up or Down

Smart Casual Outfits with Brogues

Their formal vibe makes brogue shoes the perfect shoe for dressing down with jeans or a dark-toned pair of chinos. Add a shirt layered beneath a fleece or jumper to bridge the smart-casual look.

Brogues with Skirts and Dresses

If you’re keen to lean into a more feminine look, skirts and dresses are the way to go. Pull on a tweed mini skirt and style with a loose-fitting blouse or shirt to embrace a formal aesthetic.

Brogues with Tailored Trousers

Of course, there’s no look more classic than a pair of smart trousers and polished brogues. Whether heading to a wedding, a job interview, or otherwise, they’re a match made in heaven. Men can add a waistcoat or tie for refinement, while women can pair ankle-grazing trousers with heeled brogues for a smart yet fashion-forward look.

How to Wear Brogues with Jeans

Brogue Boots

If we haven’t already made it clear, we’re huge fans of dressing-down a formal shoe with jeans (or any ‘casual’ trouser, for that matter). And because everybody has a pair these days, it makes knowing what to wear with brogues a total cakewalk.

Although we do have some style specifications we like to bear in mind when picking out the perfect jean style to complement your brogues.

  • Go for a skinny, slim, or straight style to make your brogues stand out. Wide leg and boot cut jeans are typically longer in length, and will likely hide your fancy footwear.
  • Choose a clean-cut style, avoiding particularly casual design features like raw hems or ripped knees.
  • If you’re wearing a brogue shoe, make sure your jeans sit at least an inch or so above to create that perfectly put-together look.

What Not to Wear with Brogues

In our book, there’s not a thing that doesn't pair well with brogues (although swimwear, sportswear, and equestrian gear is probably off the cards). They’re an iconic footwear choice that will undoubtedly add a little pzazz to any outfit – no matter the style or colour. But it’s all about embracing your own sense of fashion and creating a look unique to you – whether leaning into the country living aesthetic, or adding a city chic twist.
