How to Measure for a Waistcoat to Nail Your Formal Styling

29 Jun 2021 |

The waistcoat – it’s a classic piece in any modern country lady or country gents wardrobe, isn’t it? We think so, anyway. Even England manager, Gareth Southgate, makes a waistcoat look stylish and sophisticated in the 21st century.

But when it comes to buying one for yourself, it’s important to learn how a waistcoat should fit and how to measure for one (properly, not just with guesswork). So, allow us to show you the best sizing tips – for men and women – as well as inspire you with timeless styling ideas.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Measure for a Waistcoat

Tweed Waistcoat

A little waistcoat fitting advice can go a long way, so let’s get into it – it’s time to learn how to measure yourself.

1. How to Measure Your Chest for a Waistcoat

Take the tape measure around the widest part of your chest (typically somewhere near the nipple) and make sure to go under the armpits. Refer to our ladies and men’s waistcoat size chart located on individual product pages, like our Sledmere tweed waistcoat

2. Measuring Your Waist and Hips for Waistcoat Accuracy

This is normally just above the belly button (don’t go lower, as your waistcoat will not be that long). But another way to make sure you’ve got the placement just right is to find the space between the bottom of your ribcage and the top of your hips.

3. How to Measure Your Back Length

Stand tall and straight, then measure from the nape of your neck to your waistline (can you see why we measured the waist first?).

4. How to Measure Shoulder to Shoulder

Run the tape measure along your back, going from one shoulder to the other – starting on the most outward-facing part.

Our waistcoats are measured by chest size and length so the bigger the chest size, the longer the waistcoat will be. If your stomach is bigger than your chest, don’t worry. All you need to do is size up to ensure a proper fit all round.

Understanding Waistcoat Sizes and Fits

Do You Size Up or Down for Waistcoats?

Always pick the size in line with your chest measurement. If you’re perched between two sizes—or your tummy carries more weight than your pectorals—take the larger size. It’s far better to have a touch of extra room than to feel like you’re restricted in your gear.

Choosing the Right Waistcoat Length

Don’t overcomplicate it – in our eyes, there’s only one length that fits the bill in waistcoat styling. The front hem should just kiss the top of your waistband, neatly hiding your belt buckle. The back is cut slightly higher, revealing a neat strip of shirt—think subtle peekaboo, not full exposure.

Common Mistakes When Measuring for a Waistcoat

Measuring Over Bulky Layers

Wrapping the tape around a thick jumper or jacket will give you phantom inches. So, always take measurements when wearing a thin shirt (or bare torso) for true-to-you figures.

Holding the Tape Measure at a Slant

This is one of the easiest waistcoat measurement mistakes to make – a twisted or uneven tape can turn “42 inches” into “52” in no time. Ensure the tape measure is kept flat and level to get the most accurate results.

Flying Solo

One-person measuring isn’t half as effective as enlisting a helping hand. Ask someone else to take even, honest readings and save yourself from ill-fitting waistcoats.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tight should a waistcoat fit?

It should be snug enough to button without strain or stretch in the fabric, and loose enough to lift your arms comfortably.

Do waistcoats run true to size?

Here at Rydale, our waistcoats are designed to be perfectly fitted – you can use the on-page size guide for the most accurate fit.

Where do you measure your waist for a waistcoat?

Right between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips—about an inch above your belly button.

Should waistcoats cover your belt?

Yes – but only slightly. Typically, a proper-fitting waistcoat will hide the buckle of your belt and no more.

How to Style a Waistcoat: Country Gents

Men's Tweed Blazer

Getting educated on how to measure for a waistcoat is a hopeless task if your styling prowess is as good as non-existent. But luckily, it’s not a hard feat to get right.

Casual

If you’re going for a relaxed daytime look, moleskin is the way to go. Our navy moleskin front waistcoat is much more understated than black and is the perfect tone to complement dark or light wash jeans. A comfy Chelsea boot completes the ensemble for an effortless daytime look.

Smart Casual

Tweed will always add a dressier, more put-together finish to your outfit without making you look overdressed. Keep the jeans or go for chinos if you want a more tailored look without the formality, and choose a smart-casual shoe like brogue boots.

Dressy

If you’ve been searching for a reason to break out your three-piece suit, this is it – don’t hold back. Go for a colourful gingham checked shirt and tan leather brogues to give it that classic country gent aesthetic.

How to Style a Waistcoat: Country Ladies

Women's Tweed Waistcoat

If you thought waistcoats were only for the gents, you can think again. Ladies can look just as smart and put-together, in fact, our tweed ladies’ waistcoats are so versatile and feminine that it’s not just considered formalwear anymore.

Casual

A classic tweed design brings a touch of sophistication to any everyday ensemble. Take our Haworth Tweed Waistcoat, for example. This pairs effortlessly with dark wash slim fit jeans, a shirt or blouse, and some ultra-cool tan Chelsea boots, don’t you think?

Consider it the go-to choice for running errands, doing a spot of highstreet shopping, or hanging at the stables.

Smart Casual

Keep all the foundational pieces from above, but go for a darker colour palette – like a navy tweed waistcoat. Go for a printed shirt or keep it simple. You can keep the dark wash jeans or swap them for slightly smarter trousers. And of course, a leather Chelsea boot would be a good choice, especially for evening occasions.

Dressy

A three-piece tweed suit is a foolproof styling option for upscale dos, and a show-stopping outfit for wedding season. Simply pair a tweed skirt with a matching blazer, and of course, your waistcoat.
