How to Stop Shoes Rubbing Your Heels, Toes & Midfoot

27 May 2021 |

Breaking in new shoes can be particularly uncomfortable, can’t it? So much so that we put it off, opting instead to wear a pair so well-loved that they’re beautifully moulded to the shape of your feet.

But why buy a pair of brand new shoes if they’re only destined to sit in your wardrobe? We know exactly how to stop shoes rubbing, so you can show off your new pair straight away!

Why Do Shoes Rub and Cause Blisters?

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the number one reason a pair of shoes is causing you hassle – it all comes down to having the wrong size shoe.

But we know what you’re thinking: it can’t be as simple as that, can it? And you’re right, it’s actually not, despite misconception. There are a couple of other overlooked factors you might not have even realised could make you fall out of love with your fresh footwear.

  • Different size feet
  • Incorrect socks
  • Poor quality soles
  • Rushing into wearing without breaking them in
  • Not knowing your feet

Quick Remedies to Stop Shoes Rubbing

  • Apply petroleum jelly: A small dab of Vaseline on hotspots reduces friction.
  • Use blister plasters: Keep a supply in your pocket for on-the-go cushioning.
  • Try heel grips: Inserts at the back prevent heel slip in loose-fitting shoes.
  • Adjust lacing: A secure midfoot can stop your heel from lifting at the back.

How to Prevent Shoes Rubbing on Heels

1. Apply Vaseline to Rubbing Hotspots

Buying a travel-size tub of vaseline and keeping it with you on-the-go to apply to rubbing hotspots is a sound idea. This will create a slick barrier between your skin and the shoe, soothing areas suffering from friction.

2. Soften Rubbing Hotspots with Heat

This is a little more of a last-resort solution, as there’s a risk you could damage the structure or aesthetics of your new footwear. So, proceed with caution, but all you need to do is grab a hairdryer and blast it on low heat at least 30 cm away from your shoes for roughly thirty seconds. Do a touch test if you think the material is getting too warm. Then, slip them on and break them in – this should’ve made the material more supple.

3. Choose Socks with Heel Padding

Wearing thick socks, especially during exercise, is a smart idea. The built-in padding cradles your heel, absorbs shock, and stops the back of the shoe from digging in.

Rydale’s Shoe Fitting Guide

Figuring out why your shoes are rubbing or how to stop shoes rubbing, is pretty useless without knowing how your shoes should actually fit, isn’t it? So, let’s start there.

The Heel

Whether wearing your shoes with or without socks, there should be a few millimetres between your foot and the back of the shoe. If in doubt, measure just enough space to fit a finger, but no more. This will make sure they’re supportive but not tight (slight slipping is the ideal). Too big? You’ll definitely know about it – they’ll be flapping and flailing with every step.

The Midfoot

Here is where you want your shoes to be most snug. It should be tight enough to support your foot in a proper position, but not so tight that you feel a “gripping” sensation or can’t bend your foot freely. And of course, depending on the footwear, you can customise the fit with laces or buckles.

The Toes

There’s a reason shoe specialists will ask if you can wiggle your toes when trying on shoes – wiggle room is essential. And it’s a crucial factor in how to stop shoes rubbing. There should be at least half an inch between the end of the shoe and your most protruding toe (we know, impossible to measure, right?). If in doubt, have a walk around to see if your toes feel comfy – that’s always a safe bet.

Choosing Shoes That Won’t Rub

First things first – shoes should be fitted but not snug (and never so tight they restrict your movement – that’s a total no-go). Are your toes or heels experiencing too much friction with the inside of the shoe? You’ve got the perfect recipe for how to start shoes rubbing, not how to stop shoes rubbing. And if they’re too loose, well, you won’t be wearing them for long.

Top tip: even if you always buy the same size (and have done so for years), always try the next size (or half-size) up or down when shoe shopping to experience the fit. Struggling to find the right width? Get to know your feet – and what’s most comfortable – then you can figure out whether a narrow, regular, or wide fit is best.

Breaking in New Shoes Without Pain

There are no super strict rules here – but to avoid being in (potential) pain all day, breaking your new shoes in at home is a wise idea. Wear them whilst you’re doing the laundry, climbing the stairs, or simply pottering about. The goal is to gently bend and stretch the material, giving your new shoes a little flexibility before their first outing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you stop new shoes from rubbing your heels?

Apply a touch of vaseline to the area and break them in gradually – ideally around the house first.

Why do leather shoes rub my feet?

Real, quality leather is stiff by nature. Until it softens with wear or conditioning, it can cause irritation against the skin.

What can I put in my shoes to prevent blisters?

To prevent blisters from shoes, anti-chafe balms and heel grips are probably your best bet, but a thick pair of socks will also provide cushioning to minimise discomfort.

How long does it take to break in new shoes?

Most styles will only take a week or so, depending how much you wear them.
