How Should Wellies Fit? A Practical Guide for All the Family

05 Jul 2021 |

Wellington boots, or wellies as they’re more affectionately known nowadays, are notorious for being super stiff, the creator of every blister, and impossible to break in. Sound familiar?

But we’re here to tell you that wellies can actually be supportive, comfortable, and pain-free — it all comes down to making sure they fit properly. So, we’ve put together this guide not only to tell you how wellies should fit, but how to measure up before you buy and how to solve common fit problems like heel lift.

How Should Wellington Boots Fit?

Men's and ladies wellies

You might not have given much thought to how wellies should fit, but they’re not quite like your everyday footwear. They need to fit your feet and your calves properly.

Here are our top three tips:

  • Always try them on with socks – preferably the kind you’ll wear with them regularly. If you usually wear thick boot socks, you may want to go up a size. If you prefer the lightweight and breathable feel of thinner socks, stick with your usual size.

  • Make use of the calf strap. Wellies should sit snugly against your calves but never feel tight. If you don’t get on with full-length styles that go right up to the knee, consider a mid-calf version instead. You’ll likely find them more comfortable if you have a wider calf, and they’ll be easier to get on and off, too.

  • Wear them around the house first. It’s worth wearing your wellies indoors for an hour or so a few times. This helps to mould them to your feet and soften the material a little. It’ll make a big difference when you head out properly and can help avoid blisters.

How to Measure for Wellies

If you're ordering online, it’s a good idea to measure before choosing your size. Here’s what to do:

  • Foot length: Place your heel against a wall and measure from the wall to the tip of your longest toe. This gives your true foot length.

  • Foot width: Measure around the widest part of your foot (usually across the ball) with a soft tape. This is handy if you’ve found boots tight in the past.

  • Calf circumference: Sit down with your feet flat and measure around the widest part of your calf. It’s worth checking this against the boot measurements if you have broader or slimmer calves than average.

If you’re in between sizes, go for the larger size and add an insole or wear thicker socks to help with the fit.

Common Fit Problems & How to Fix Them

Even when you get the size right, there can still be small niggles. Here’s how to sort them:

Heel Lift

Some movement in the heel is normal, but too much can cause rubbing or blisters. To help:

  • Try thicker socks to fill out the space
  • Add a cushioned insole to raise the heel slightly
  • Use gel heel grips for a snug fit that won’t move

Cold or Sore Feet

Traditional rubber wellies can be quite hard underfoot. Make things more comfortable with:

  • Thermal insoles for insulation
  • Merino wool socks for warmth and breathability
  • Double-layer socks to prevent rubbing on longer walks

Choosing the Right Style for You

Wellies

Once you’ve got the fit sorted, think about how you’ll be using them and which style would best complement your leg shape:

For Work or Farming

Go for a matte finish in a neutral colour, with deep tread and a cosy neoprene lining to keep your feet warm and comfortable all day. The matte finish helps to disguise dirt and grime, although they may take a little more work to get clean.

For Country Walks or Casual Wear

A gloss pair in a bold colour or pattern can add a pop of personality to your outfit – ideal for stops at the local coffee shop mid-walk or rainy trips into town. Try matching your coat or scarf to your boots for a fully coordinated look. Our festival wellies are perfect for this.

For Wider or Narrow Calves

Look out for boots with adjustable gussets or shorter shafts if you have wider calves. If your calves are slim, a mid-calf cut can offer a closer fit, or try pairing full-length boots with thicker socks to help fill the gap.
