As parents we have proudly attended many of our children’s lifetime achievements, from their first nativity play right down to their awards ceremony at the karate club or Dance school. Since the day that they were born we have wanted the very best that life can offer to them and haven’t we all strived to achieve this!
From the endless nights of worry waiting for them to make it home safely from a night out with friends or that text to let us know they are ok, we have always needed to know that they are safe and well. The college days soon pass by and before we know it our little cherubs are collecting their A level results hoping and praying that they have secured a place within their chosen University! The tears of joy when they open that little brown envelope to reveal their fate is certainly a relief.
With their enrolment date in place, and student loan arranged, watching them pack up their worldly belongings to get ready to flee the nest is simply harrowing and the dread that we feel after we leave them in a different city to survive without us is just unbearable.
The bank of Mum soon becomes a fund for student groceries and drinks with friends and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The phone calls become less as they start to face life without us, and we look forward to the holidays when they arrive home with a suitcase just to eat us out of house and home.
Seeing them all grownup and hearing the choices that they have made without us whilst they are away makes it time to accept, they are no longer our sweet little children, and just young adults trying to find their way in the world around them.
Three years of mud, sweat and tears later, Graduation Day soon arrives, and it will be without a doubt the single proudest moment of your life as a parent.
